The Golden Years
After decades of hard work and perseverance, the Golden Years should be a time to enjoy the fruits of that labor, relax and fulfill your dreams!
Unfortunately, it is also the time when the natural aging process can be a hard reality check. As you age, your muscle mass decreases. Starting at age 50, you start losing 3-5 percent of muscle mass per decade, increasing 1-2 percent each year.
Metabolic hormones such as growth hormone and testosterone also diminish as we age. These hormones are necessary to maintain lean muscle and prevent tissue breakdown. The best way to remedy the situation and increase these hormones and lean muscle mass is by taking part in regular physical activity such as: walking, hiking, swimming, bicycling, skiing, light jogging, strength training and stretching routines.
The Golden Years are also the time in our life when we want to reflect on what life still has to offer and take advantage of the opportunity to fulfill those dreams that we push to the back of our minds. For some of those dreams to become reality, being healthy and in good mental and physical condition is a necessity.
Remember the days in your younger years you made a list of all that you wanted to accomplish in your life time, all of the goals you set for yourself? Well let’s get to work: the clock is ticking, so don’t just sit back and procrastinate!
I want to motivate you by directing you to some different activities that you can incorporate daily to maintain health and happiness. Exercise is not the only requirement to stay healthy, proper nutrition is a vital part of getting your body in peak condition. Individuals who are physically fit eat a healthy, well-balance diet and take nutritional supplements.
Experts agree that exercise is the best anti-aging pill that is available. Research shows that short 10 minute sessions of activity are just as beneficial as one prolonged session. Therefore, your daily routine could be as simple as taking a few short walks or op
ting for the stairs. Regular exercise may boost your levels of telomerase, an enzyme that protects against cellular aging.
Check with your health care professional before starting any kind of physical fitness program. Always start out slowly, especially if you have been a couch potato. Remember to be patient; never push yourself to discomfort.
Healthy food choices can be achieved if we make small diet changes: water instead of soda, grilled instead of fried, whole-grain bread instead of white, and adding more fruits and vegetables.
Changes can be overwhelming at first, but by making them gradually you will start to notice how much better you feel.
